Pilar Cyst

Figure 01

A pilar cyst is similar to an epidermal cyst; however, it is usually found on the scalp. It can appear as single or multiple lesions, starting as a little pebble under the skin of the scalp and slowly growing over months to years. Sometimes the pilar cyst can become inflamed and tender. It can be surgically removed through a small incision (often smaller than the cyst) by your dermatologist under local anesthesia. A pilar cyst is not a precancerous growth. [Figure 1]
