Freckles are round to oval, small flat lesions, tan to brown colored with smooth borders. Usually they are found on sun-exposed areas, such as the face, the upper back, and the backs of the hands and legs. Freckles always appear as multiple lesions in early childhood. Sun exposure may make freckles darker, or freckles may fade completely in the winter. Freckles are not moles, and while moles may appear anywhere on the skin, freckles ordinarily are limited to sun-exposed areas on the body. Individuals with fair skin freckle most easily. [Figure 1]
